Advantages of an external rug -2

Rugs can do for open spaces what they have been doing for indoor spaces for many years — they define the area and add color, style and texture. Outdoor carpets today are so attractive, durable and affordable, that many of them look great like covered rugs.

Here are some tips to consider when buying or replacing an outdoor mat:

  • Some are more durable than others. Any carpet will last longer if you place it in a closed area.

  • Sometimes a good shaking and cleaning of stains is all that is needed for walking outdoors. You can also vacuum it. But for a good cleaning, hang up, pull it out and let it dry before returning it.

  • When buying, find a label that says 100 percent polypropylene. The tag should also say that the carpet is resistant to UV radiation in order to resist fading, mold and mildew.

  • Since outdoor carpets are made from synthetic, durable, all-weather materials, they are also suitable for indoor use, especially in high traffic areas and in dirt.

  • If you are trying to decide between a manual or a machine mat, think: machine carpets are lighter, they dry out faster and they are better suited for open areas. Handwork may have a higher pile and feel softer, but they hold water and will remain moist for longer.

  • Add a mesh under the rug if it slips off. The pad will also make it thicker.

  • Choosing an outside rug, determine the size. In the living room, at least all the front legs of the furniture should be on the carpet. In the dining area, all legs should be on the rug, even when the chairs go out.

  • Modern popular designs include bold colors and patterns, especially floral, botanical and geometric.

Be sure to remember that mold and mildew can form on an open carpet if it is often spilled (or your sprinkler). A good quality outdoor rug will be made in order to withstand the rapid growth of mold and mildew, however there is no rug we have ever seen that completely “proved the shape”. To make your mat last for many years, throw it over the railing again or hang it after heavy rain or any time it gets really wet. Mark your calendar to do this once a week and you'll be fine. It will also help to dry and keep the surface under the rug! Especially if this surface is a wooden deck.

Take care of your outdoor carpet and he will take care of you.
