In October 2001, Dish Network and Direct TV made a very serious attempt to join forces with each other, which would give these two satellite television providers a huge monopoly in the satellite television industry, but the US Department of Justice took a bold face and blocked the merger.
If there was a merger between Dish Network and Direct TV, the new company would serve the entire US without fear of competition, with the result that a full monopoly position is not allowed. As we all know, competition stimulates competitive pricing and continuous progress, and a merger of this magnitude will basically lead to less progress and the possibility of inflated prices.
Currently, the Dish network and Direct TV are the only two satellite TV providers in America, merging between them would reduce it to one company, which is clearly dangerous for the monopoly for consumers. Even in areas with cable television, the merger will result in only 2 television broadcasting providers, each of which has a monopoly on its own technology.
In a statement, Dish Network and Direct TV stated that their unification of forces needed to compete with cable TV giants. However, at the time of this request, statistics showed that satellite television was growing at an incredibly fast pace, and cable television subscriptions were declining.
Apparently, without any other satellite TV providers, the merger between Dish Network and Direct TV would not be in the public interest.
The fact that there are two satellite television providers, and not just one, is a blessing to anyone who is interested in registering for a satellite TV service, as mentioned earlier, the competition is good for pricing.
