Get a life, not just a job! -2

Before considering your next job change or career change, it is important that you look at the lifestyle you want today and in the future. When you determine the course of your career, you will find that other aspects of your life will also come into the picture - where you live, how you spend your money, how you spend your free time. This time of career planning is also a time to think about life planning. When I first meet with my clients, before I ask them what they want to do, I ask them what kind of life they want to live.

Even in carefree Hawaii there is an expression - Pau Khan, which means “after work”. Until the last decade, most of our lives were built around work and after work. It always seemed to me that our society motivates us to work long and hard on what we hate, to get a few hours to do what we really love. When I grew up in the Midwest, it was the highest of compliments that could be called "good." worker or # worker.

Our days are usually divided into preparation for work, work, work, working lunches, late work, returning home from work, dinner and doing the work we took home, and then planning for the next day of work.

And so, day after day, 50 weeks a year with two weeks, we follow this cycle. And we are joining - you guessed it was a “rat race” until we were so worn out that we should be fired.

As we said, you will probably have up to seven people (or more) in your life. As my mother said so briefly, when I told her the name of this book: “Yes, no more than one job.” If you are guided by values and are driven by a lifestyle, it will be much easier for you to create a rewarding career when it suits your lifestyle.

Integrate your choice of life / work: do not start with "starting" and "best."

Just remember, this time, you do not start - you start "better." When writing this chapter, I wanted to include impressive stories about people who would inspire you to exchange a tie for a lasso, take a ride in the open distance or sell your BMW and spend the next season of your life climbing a mountain. Everest. But when I looked at the case histories, I found that some of them are really impressive, but others may seem more ordinary, since “getting life, not just work” is a very personal enterprise.

Here are three examples of how people not only changed their careers, but also contributed to their lives:

I was fortunate enough to work with the international baseball hero Sadahara O, Japanese Baby Ruth. Oh San, what is his name, resigned from baseball and longed to give people some joy from the game he loved so much. It was a great honor for me to work with him to create the World Baseball Foundation in the world, a camp where children all over the world meet to play ball for a few weeks every year. By sharing what he loved, he created a new career for himself in the process. But he did not do it alone. I worked with him to create an advisory council, from Hollywood celebrities to business leaders, with other athletes to help fulfill his dream. Now he can travel the world every summer, visiting his baseball camps in foreign countries.

Another extraordinary person has already integrated his career with his lifestyle, while he was still in his 20s. I met Douglas Heir while working with Olympians Mary Lou Retton and
Bob Richards on Wheaties Search for Champions - a national quest for outstanding amateur athletes. The heir was a member of the US Olympic wheelchair team. He won four medals at the World Wheelchair Olympic Games in spear and debate competitions. When I met him, Hare was also a law student and lecturer at Rutger University. He would not agree to one career, but rather combined his sportsmanship with his search for the law.

Gina, another client, discovered that her true vocation was in social work. “There is nothing more useful than helping to build a community center brick by brick, side by side with your own hands,” she explains. Being a volunteer on the local crisis line led her to return to school at the age of 35 to get a master's degree in social work. After she lost her job to Enron, she thought the world was over, but she volunteered to the local YWCA. He was there, working with his displaced housewife. she realized that simply getting another corporate job at Human Resources is not enough.

Too old to change your life?

Many people fear that they are too old to start all over again. However, I discovered that my clients successfully regenerate at any age. San Francisco actor and writer Dean Goodman dreamed all his life to make films, and in the 70s he became one of the main roles in the film Francis Ford Coppolo.

Conducting research for this book, I came across an interesting fact about illustrator Kh.A. Rey, marked by his charming drawings of Curious George, a curious little monkey that always gets in trouble. Ray, who lived from 1898 to 1977, sold baths up and down the Amazon from 26 to 38 years old, until he married his wife Margaret. He then embarked on an artistic career, releasing the wonderful book Curious George. From the seller of the bath on the book illustrator “Amazon” with books now on Amazon.com The lifestyle has changed a lot!

Changes in life caused by the crisis

Not all careers are planned, many start by chance or when people like you and me go through hard times - divorce, reduction in size, and even financial crisis. Act Ed O & # 39; Neil, probably best known as Al Bundy on the classic The television show "Married with Children" was a professional soccer player at a time. After he was cut off from the pro team, he decided to take a break (like many of my clients) and stay in Florida, where he was in spring training. He supported himself as a bell by coincidence in the same hotel in which he remained as a ball player.

He needs what I call the “station stop” in life. This is not an easy time for most of my clients. And in fact, the transition to transition is often filled with a potpourri of emotions — confusion, anger, regret, and hope. And problems. As a caller, Neil was called to the reception one day to carry the bags of some of his former team members who returned to town to play football. Can you imagine what kind of mockery he should have taken? He reports that he has driven them back - using this sarcastic humor, which will become his trademark on television in the future. And he also took advice. Of all the qualities that help during the transition, I found that the ability to decrease is one of the best. And to understand how, for example, Neil, this period of uncertainty is not constant. Someday you, like Neil, will move on to the next episode, and perhaps even in the series "Role."

Where will you live?

Where you live, you should not choose a career choice, but a “personal” decision. Thanks to a plan of action, the right technology, a small capital and many opportunities, you can live in the mountains, in the city, on both banks or abroad - no matter what profession you want to practice. In fact, you can choose where you live before you consider what you want.

BEST PLACES FOR LIVING AND WORKING?

What are the best places in America? MONEY magazine publishes a new list every summer, comparing about 300 different areas across the country.

Check your library for other directories or search the web. According to the Office of Management and Budget of the USA, the best cities for jobs (in alphabetical order) are Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington. Unsurprisingly, & # 39; dotcom & # 39; graduates moved to the city of the Sun.

A SMALL CITY OR A BIG CITY: THOSE TAKES A WORK AT ANY TIME ....

If you are raising children, you will want to choose a family-oriented community. Zero Population Growth protects 10 factors, including population stability, crowding, children's health, crime, education, air quality, and water resources in determining their best cities. But you may want to know where the best hiking trails are ours, where the best fishing ponds are located, so that you can enjoy your favorite hobbies with your family.

Remember: "more is not always better." Speaking of zero population says: "We found a strong correlation between the size of the city or metropolis and the general stress on children."

To learn more about other areas of the country and about job opportunities in Europe or Asia, consult with the chambers of commerce and the Internet. Many will send you sophisticated packages, including fancy DVDs from their city. In fact, some wards and economic development groups will refer you to local recruiters in their area if you have the skill they need. Or just go to the area that you are interested in for a quick weekend. Recently, staying in bed and breakfast in a small rural town, the owner tried to force one of my career clients to change their lives and help start a local museum with her. All my client wanted to do was visit the area where her grandparents owned the farm, but the weekend trip quickly turned into a career and life opportunity.

Agreeing on what you want to do, where you want to live, can be a creative process. Think about “your” career and life choices. How could you make them happen in a big city? In a small town? Let's look at these two options with multiple career choices.

1. Do you want to become a writer / writer or screenwriter?

Big city: you can become a technology writer in a large computer firm during the day and write science fiction notes. You can hit New York and get an old college.
a neighbor who lives there to confirm his off-broadway play. Or see that college celebrity you went to school and went to Hollywood to see if you can write a concert for your new reality show.

A small town: think about turning your family mountain into a writer's retreat and attract some old professors to conduct several seminars — go ahead, be bold and moderate by some of the workshops of short stories. You can contact your Denver headquarters from your ski chalet in Aspen. Actually think “out of bounds”, look for Yosemite — go ahead, and create a regional theater repertoire on weekends and work as a forester for a week. Who knows one of the highly reliable tourists you meet may be a Broadway talent agent.

2. Year to become the leader of a tourist tour or a rafting guide?

Big City: You can choose to create a chair & # 39; multimedia adventures for local travel companies
or get a concert with your local cable station and start your own show.

Small town: explore dozens of caves, caves or other natural resources nearby.
Become a guide for adventure travel. Organize online chat travel blog of the 21st century
travelers with disabilities together for the adventures of their lives.

3. Want to have your own business?

Big City: Are you a great barbecue chef? Think about creating your own barbecue for the weekend
catering business as a medium for school children and other non-profit organizations.

Small city: open only an open barbecue area in the open air near the largest campsite
in area. In winter, find a large food conglomerate to buy your family’s secret barbecue.
sauce recipe.

4. Want to sail around the world?

Big city: go to the nearest pier and open time. visit other potential sailors who can help finance the boat of your dreams. Occupy a digital video camera and document special occasions related to yacht owners. You can sail for free when you sharpen your movie.

Small Town: Learn to swim in reconnaissance groups in the area or create a senior class for everyone who shares your dream.

EXPERIMENT:

To challenge creativity, consider options for small cities and large cities for the following careers and lifestyle:

* Making a contribution to the world.

* Preserving local history.

* Share the love of gardening and gardening.

Since you think your lifestyle choices and where you want to live, there are other factors that you can weigh:

* Your family situation. Do you have a spouse? Do you want one? Children? Are you one parent? Does the ex-spouse have visiting rights? Are you looking for a new partner? Do you have any family obligations that can keep you in a certain area?

* Your bank account. Do you have at least 6-month living expenses so you can start working in a new community? Keep in mind that the cost of living varies from community to city. Six months in a small town can be as low as $ 10,000 or less, while in a large metropolitan city that may not even cover the costs of relocation for a family of four.

* Your hobbies and leisure. Can't live without a quiet walk in the country every weekend? Do you succeed in theater and nightlife? Whether climbing or riding a horse, make sure you choose a locale that is compatible with your recreational interests or be ready to start your own rodeo.

* Your social life. True, you can meet amazing people almost wherever you go. But you may find that your social life revolves around your church or synagogue. Too often, many of my clients depend on work to spark their social activism, and when they change jobs, they feel empty. Plan to connect with local community organizations or alumni heads in a new location.

But what if you can't afford to move?

Like many of my clients, you may feel limited due to lack of resources - green! But do not worry, there are ways to beat the bank.

Consider house swapping. There are many online sites that offer mostly home swaps in the country for skyscrapers in the city. Be sure to check them carefully to make sure that the law you choose is legal. I found that it is often easier to just tell someone that you want to exchange your apartment for a mountain cabin — professional organizations such as Women in Cinema or the manager of your gym may have a friend or a relative desire for such an opportunity.

Explore the house sitting in the city of your choice. If you are comfortable, the absentee owner may even pay you a fee to help fix this broken porch or fix the roof.

How about going international?

What if you love living in Switzerland or deep-sea fish on an island in Micronesia? This is even possible under the budget. Before moving from depth, consider the following options:

1) You may want to leave on vacation at your teaching concert and live in Barbados for a month before making a final decision.

2) You may want to know if you can get a regular concert in a new locale, even if you need to buy a franchise in the region or create your own small business. Having a job will give you time to check the region without touching your net worth.

3) You may want to work for an American company internationally, where there are offices or jobs for locals you warn to travel in the future. Or, first inspect the area, putting the short way before packing their chests for permanent movement.

4) You may want to keep the protective net of the house - substitute your house, take your housemate for your house, keep the egg in the bank where you came from in the nest.

Before you go to other lands, prepare for trips:

Most of my clients spend more time planning their summer holidays than planning their life plans. Even if you check your account to a minimum, you can get your dream start for a small or zero cost:

1) Learning the language in your free time (most universities offer low-cost evening classes).
