This river has many tributaries, the longest of which is the Missouri. The second longest is the Arkansas River. The largest tributary is the Ohio River, which travels 980 miles from Illinois, Cairo and Mississippi.
Tributaries of the Mississippi River include the Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Montana, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and South Dakota rivers.
The Mississippi River Delta is a shallow excavation between the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. This delta basin is approximately 512,000 acres. Its open water is about 420,000 acres. The remaining areas - land with low relief. The most notable features here are a bank of natural channels. This basin accounts for sixty-one percent of the total land area of Mississippi.

The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial was created to commemorate historical events. The National Military Park of Vicksburg is dedicated to celebrating the Vicksburg Campaign. Natchez National Historical Park is closed to the public. The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park promotes jazz music for entertainment. Both the Jean Lafitta National Historical Park and Reserve promotes all natural and cultural resources.
