When the next week rolled, I was very motivated to meet with my boss and find out that the ingredient was missing. I spent a few weeks trying to determine everything that I could do - that I had the ability and opportunity - if I wanted. And last week I explored many areas where I had much more knowledge and even training than my results in these areas. I now had a strong desire to find out what was holding me back, and, as I said, I was motivated to finally learn how to use more of what I had.
This led me to believe that I know what is missing: motivation. I clearly lacked proper motivation or a strong enough desire to use my abilities and knowledge. I could not wait to see him again, and this meeting took place the following Monday. As usual, he asked me how was my weekly experiment. I told him that I discovered that I know much more about things than I used. He smiled again at that smile, and this time I smiled. He asked me what I thought, and I told him:
“Something is missing,” I was suddenly proud, “there was motivation!” Obviously, I just don’t want it badly enough, and therefore I don’t want what I want to happen. I put my business and waited for his reply. As usual, he started asking me a question.
He asked: “Mike, do you now believe that you have the potential, the potential that, if you wanted, could get a good enough shape to complete the marathon?”
"Absolutely!" I said.
“And you think you know more about fitness and nutrition than your current weight, exercise and eating habits show?”
“Unfortunately, yes,” I replied.
“Ok, now let me ask you about it. Have you ever entered the gym with the desire to get into the upper physical form before? "
“Ah, yes, I'm at the gym now,” I said.
“Why do you belong to the gym?” He asked.
“Because I want to be fit and take care of myself,” I said.
“So you already have the desire to be in shape?”
I always think about going back to the gym and getting started again. start working again, ”I said.
“And the last question. Are you at your maximum fitness level now? ”He asked me.
“Away from this, I'm afraid,” came my pitiful response.
“So, here we are,” he continued. “You have the ability, you have the knowledge, in other words, you know what to do and even belong to the gym, and you have the desire to be in good physical shape. Correctly?"
He got me there. “That's right,” I agreed.
“So the real question is, Mike, where does the performance go? Why are there no results in your life if you seem to have everything you need? Something is stopping you from achieving performance and results Do you really want? "
Then we moved on to several other areas in my life where I had everything I needed. The biggest area was my work in sales. I had to admit that again I had the abilities, and I, of course, trained, and I knew more than I used. In addition, every month I set a goal with my sales manager to reach my numbers. We set out how many calls I needed to make, and how many directions and presentations I needed to schedule.
Then my sales manager made a compensation plan, and we got to the point that for me, each additional level would be achieved. My manager even went so far as to show me that I can buy at the expense of additional commissions that I would have made. After each planning session, the targets pumped me over! But then the month began, and the calls became harsh, and I soon returned to where I secretly knew that we would end up with: at the bottom, 25% of the sales team.
At that moment I pull in my hands and give up. I actually felt good, because I was convinced that I had everything I needed for the best work in my life, but for some unknown reason it seemed to me that I was destined to find mediocrity. I started thinking about my family and wondered if the inferiority was genetic ...
My boss, feeling my despair, came to my rescue. He told me: “Mike, what I’m going to teach you over the next few weeks is not only that you no longer have reached your potential, preparation and desire, but I’m going to show you exactly that you will start change. I'm going to give you proven methods and methods for releasing more of what you have, more of what you know, and more of what you want.
“In fact,” he continued, “what you are going to study is that it’s actually easy to increase your effectiveness in any area of your life if you just understand the laws governing behavior and performance. Reconciling with these laws of performance, you can set and achieve any goal that makes sense to you.
Well, it sounds too good to be true. I set myself tasks earlier - especially at the beginning of each year (New Year's resolutions). And while I continued them for a month or so, I soon saved up and returned to the old me. I even bought it in terms of setting goals around getting fit. I told him that my willpower would last a few weeks, but then I would hesitate, stop going to the gym, and then I would beat myself every time I slip and I’ll have a donut in the office.
He raised his eyebrows and said: “This is actually a good example. In fact, have you ever noticed that there is plenty of parking in the gymnasiums throughout the city in January and February? ”I agreed. "But by March and April, they return to where they were in November and December, and they remain the same for the rest of the years." It is true, I had to agree.
He asked me how this diet process was for me at the beginning of the year. I told him that I must gather all my strength of will and determination, and that it worked during the first two weeks. But after a while I felt a denial of tasty foods, and despite the fact that I wanted to stay on a diet, I soon returned to the rest room in the morning, eating bagels and cream cheese. Soon I was surprised where all my good intentions and willpower went.
He said: “Mike, you are not alone. Making changes with the help of many and many wills is how most people do it, but it rarely works for a long time, it never works for a long time. , and it usually makes those around you annoy.
"What you are going to study is that it is difficult to overcome your unchanging, subconscious picture that will never work for long-term changes."
He stopped and let it sink. He could see a lot of questions that I was thinking about, and he continued: “That's what. Think of your subconscious and your abilities and potential as an iceberg. performance and results are just the tip of the iceberg, but your potential, of course, is immune.
“I like to compare the human mind with a computer. The computer has many, many programs and features, but we use only a very small part of them. We just know how to open a new document, type some copy and then save it, but there are endless editing possibilities, amazing templates and document variants, even translation functions into languages that we don’t use or know little. A program is an iceberg, and what we use is only advice.
“So how can we expect more from this iceberg?” How do we use more of what we already have in abundance? The answer is that we have to figure out what keeps us, what limits our natural abilities and potential, limiting relationships, and the habits and blocks that store most of this iceberg under water?
“And more importantly, how can we unleash more of our potential? How can we do it in a natural, easy and capable way? ”Other words, how can we creatively, pleasantly and consistently produce the results that we do are already recognized, what are we capable of? How to achieve performance, we see that others use regularly, easily, naturally?
“And, most importantly, how can we make these changes permanent?”
He paused and let it sink. I said, "I don't know how we are?"
“This is what I will teach you. And as soon as you find out, it will change your life, just as I have mine and countless others. And we will start next week exploring the concept of awareness, and start looking at your habits, your unconscious ways of thinking and feeling, as well as the default actions that you take as a result. And start to challenge and change them.
“You will soon learn that, although you have the potential for immunity, you can never use all of this and your abilities. And therefore, athletes and top manufacturers understand that they never compete with anyone other than their own, current, best versions of themselves. ”
He stopped short and continued: “Mike, you are going to go on a journey of self-knowledge that will forever change your thoughts about yourself, about the world and what is possible for you and others, the truth that I am going to lay out for you, you will achieve something never imagined possible. Your life will change, grow and expand. You will be more and more, and you do, you will raise the bar for your work and expose more of this iceberg potential.
“Your life will become a self-fulfilling prophecy, as it always has been, but the dreams that you begin to dream will go far beyond what you have ever imagined possible.”
Needless to say, I was inspired and pleased to learn more. I hope you too.
