The historic charm and noisiness of the city certainly make Charleston South Carolina stand out as a place to visit. Charleston combines old-style charm with youth vitality. Historic Charleston is steeped in history. Since the beginning of the civil war in Fort Sumter to numerous historic houses and southern plantations, Charleston has been a Mecca for historians. With so many things to do in Charleston, it's hard to narrow it down. However, for me there are a few things that stand out among the rest.
1. Take a boat trip through historic Charleston. These rides are reasonably priced, and coupons are usually available at local hotels to reduce prices. Private tours are also available, but they cost a lot more money. (In the hottest summer days, horse-drawn carriages do not go for reasons of horse health).
2. Visit the Sea Turtle Hospital in South Carolina Aquarium. It will cost a little more, but the money you spend will go to help the Sea Turtles. Be sure and check the time because the tours are only scheduled a couple of times a day.
3. Walk through the traditional plantation. Middletown Place, currently listed on the National Historic Register, is located in America’s oldest garden gardens. Reactivators are located next to the stables that perform traditional southern activities. Be sure to visit the restaurant during the visit and enjoy a delicious dinner surrounded by southern charm.
Magnolia Plantation is great for outdoor enthusiasts, providing numerous photo opportunities. This plantation was founded in 1676. The hotel has a natural train, boat ride, marsh garden and a zoo.
4. The Charleston Tea Plantation, located just outside Charleston on Vadmalau Island, is the only tea plantation in North America. Take a plantation economic, educational trolleybus tour and enjoy free samples of tasty teas. I found a trolley coupon online.
5. Visit the Market Pavilion’s entrance bar located at 225 East Bay Street. The hotel offers a breathtaking view of the river and city. Take a table and enjoy a soda or a pre-dinner cocktail while you enjoy the view.
6. To have fun and not damage your pocket book, try Tommy Condon's Irish Pub, located on Church Street 160 in historic Charleston. This is a favorite of the locals. Try visiting on Wednesday to Sunday nights so you can enjoy live Irish folk music with dinner. I found coupons both on line and locally for food here.
