Every time a boat is used in salt water, a small amount of salt accumulates on the water galleries. Over time, the amount of salt increases. Even when washing the engine, you do not remove all the salt. Sometimes you need to replace the power strip.
What do they do and how much?
When the magazine performs a gasket job, it includes the removal of the Powerhead or the engine part of the outboard. The store will clean and cover the base pad of the Powerhead base. (Here the engine slides into the middle of the outboard.) A good time is when the power head is off to replace the lower crankshaft seals.
Depending on the manufacturer of the outboard, the exhaust or side plates will be removed, and the water galleries will be cleaned and checked, and new gaskets will be installed. The heads will also be removed, the cylinders and head water galleries will be cleaned, and the water traps or stops in the water galleries will be checked or replaced at this time. Thermostats are usually replaced, and heads usually float before installation.
Virtually all of the gaskets I perform require the use of an air or cordless drill to literally drill salt in the reservoirs. I have seen some engines with salt build up so badly that it actually blew out the side of the unit due to the pressure of the pickles. These engines could not be fixed, and the customer had to purchase a new engine. This is a very important part of the ministry, so find out when your motor last laid the gasket before it was late ...
This is an expensive job, and in winter it pays for ordering a boat to the store. This is best for stores because they are quiet. This helps them by giving them work, and most stores are usually very busy in the summer and can go all out to interfere with you. Sometimes in some stores there are winter special jokes .... So with a lot of work, such as gaskets, it will save you a lot of money if you can get a special winter.
If you are not sure whether the gaskets were completed or your engine is approaching 5 years old, ask your dealer when they recommend gaskets. Get their list before it is too late and costs you a lot of money.
