Sussex County Delaware Beach areas Cities and villages are unique and historic! -2

This is in the field of a lot of history ...

I love Sussex County Delaware. I am born, multi-generation and proud to be one of those, as they say; "From here."

The earliest records of our family show that we were here long before the Mayflower arrived in 1620; some of our ancients were here at the beginning of 1500 or earlier; when the only records here were all the family Bibles that were kept in each family.

In this area, we were inhabited by those who avoided religious persecution in Europe. This heritage has much in common with the names and character of our region. Many local ancestors fled from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man when Henry IV overthrew Richard II, and subsequent political and religious cleansing sent religious fanatics to inaccessible places and took care of England. I learned that many were only the breadwinners and did not go in for the farm or the hunt, only fished, from the directions they read in the Bible.

Some of these people turned into local farmers, simple foresters, breeders of wild plants and eaters, herbalists, tanners, soap masters, hunters and in all missions in the areas where Lewis, Milton, Angola, Long Neck, Brodkill, Nassau, Cool Spring, Whitesville, Quakertown and Red Mill Pond.

These people worshiped only God, Christ, and read only the most original scriptures or were, as they say, just a PLAN ... It was all deadly illegal in accordance with British rule, except when it was licensed by the king. Others were burned, hanged, painted, billeted, sunk slowly and otherwise tortured to death in public and hospitalized in appalling conditions.

I was brought up on the fact that now is the Eagle Cross airfield, on what was previously known as white farms, not far from Milton. I began to study at the Milton School, then entered the Lewis School and graduated from the 1967 Lewis School. Since then, I have lived in several areas, which the locals sometimes call Saltwater Sussex, and what I called the Henlopen Quadrant; that is, locations within a radius of 25 miles from Cape Henlopen.

Whites, Taylors, McIntyrs, Potters, Fishers, Maulles, Britnings, etc. D. Belonged to my mother and were or were descended from the earliest teachers and missionaries I know about. Many of these early settlers created mills and pond mills, where (perhaps the first manufacturing industry in America) was crushed from oak bark and turned into tannin. This barrage of creeks, in order to produce the power of the mill, caused our first swellings of small creeks and springs into what became more mill ponds. The Red Mill Pond was such an early example as the Milton Pond, Millsboro Pond and some smaller ones, such as the Beaver Dam Pond and the Pilot Plant, etc. When the mills were abandoned , and the dams burst, many of these ponds retreated and disappeared,

These “simple people”, as they were often known in themselves, were simply equal and not attached to any king or religion, except God and the Bible in its native languages and in early German. I recall some handwritten Bibles, in ink and pen, the Bible in our family home on what is now Eagle Cross Road and Route One.

Route 1, by the way, was the first road in present-day America and is associated with all the original settlements, although it was at first useful only on foot, later a mule and a horse. Much later van. Numerous and later bridges were expensive, crossing this land from south to north, crossing numerous streams, streams and rivers that fed from the land to Delaware Bay.

Cape Henlopen is the nodal point of the salt water of Sussex, where Delaware Bay meets and flows into the Atlantic Ocean in Lewis. When you stand on Cape Henlopleen Point, you can see the shaving line of color change, where the dark waters of the bay correspond to the blue waters of the ocean along a diagonal line stretching from beach to sea. This darkness of water is caused by nutrient-rich, therefore muddy, waters that are seen from a large swamp that borders almost all Delaware.

This Great Swamp, even today, is one of the most ecologically rich and diverse lands in the world; there were thousands of native plants and many animals. Here they have no indigenous predators, which could be talked about. The most wonderful book about this swamp is Progger: “Life in a swamp” by Tony Florio. Only in the past few years, predators have used these lands, feral dogs and cats were freed from tourists, visitors and new citizens in our great swamp, no longer domestic animals, such thousands of wild cats and dogs, which led to a deadly new addition to the land.

Here in Salt Water-Sussex, we have a marked absence of venomous snakes. Early equal people were unique in that they learned to live here all year round (although the American Indians did not), especially in and along this fertile swamp. These simple people ventured over this land and any others who came here, their complete admiration, acceptance and friendship. They loved and loved the natives who watched, hunted and fished here. This character made them be kind, strong, courageous and resourceful - and they deserved the trust and admiration of these natives.

Because of the relatively large number of settler missionaries here and the prosperity they created, the inventive trading products they produced and the services for the indigenous peoples — along with the goodness they enjoyed among all ... there was a lot of peace between local hunters and fishermen with these equal people.

It was found that this region is of great importance for the Dutch and the British. Ordinary people tend to stay away from each other as a manifestation of privacy and independence. They usually did not join the dangerous, politically militant and disease-infected cities for several generations after these cities were created here - as the territory was colonized. In fact, there were many colonial cities that became extinct or were burned by the natives - due to the unhealthy conditions and moods that prevailed. Ordinary people recorded facts. Thus, we have numerous stories about places where everyone was killed or died, and these stories were written by local ordinary people.

Lewis: This region has been hotly contested by Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and English. The first officially registered village here on the beach was created by Dutch patrons or owners in partnership with Dutch navigator David Petersen de Vries; It was named Swanendael and was founded (1631) on the site of the city of Lewis. However, during the year it was destroyed by the attack of the Indians. Despite this attack, the Native Americans were generally friendly and willing to trade with newbies. And, in particular, the locals, who rarely lived here, but hunted and fished here during the seasons without mosquitoes, got along well with equal people, and not with the settlers.

The Dutch West Indian company, organized in 1623, was more interested in trading on the South River, because Delaware was called at that time than in the settlement (the North River was Hudson, in the Dutch colony of New Holland). Several Dutch people interested in the settlement of the territory put their services at the disposal of Sweden and colonized the area for this country. The most famous of these was Peter Minuit, who was governor of New Amsterdam (later New York). In the years 1637-38. Minuit sent a colonizing expedition to the Swedes, who organized a new Sweden. Fort Christina was founded in 1638 on the site of Wilmington and was named after the Queen of Sweden. The colony grew with the arrival of Swedish, Finnish and Dutch settlers.

The waters of the Delaware Bay are tributaries and watersheds from the Great Swamp and all small creeks, streams, rivers and wetlands of eastern Delaware and New Jersey, as well as the wastewater of the Delaware River flowing from Pennsylvania and New York. Thus, the darker waters of the Delaware Bay are, therefore, particles and filtered organic matter from areas of the Great Marsh and wetlands. These darker waters then flow, as a rule, to the south along the beaches of Rehoboth, Dewey, until the clear waters of the Indian River and the bay, which push the Indian inlet, become darker waters from the coast to the sea. Thus, the ocean water on the beaches to the south of the Gulf of India is usually much clearer than to the north of the entrance.

Lewis is known as the First City in the First State, because of this Dutch settlement, although it did not survive. Lewis was the first city to settle in the state of Delaware, and Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution - because we proudly announce the name for Lewis, the first city in the First State. Lewis was first settled by the Dutch and the Swedes. The local bookstores have numerous books on the history of Lewis, as well as two dozen different historical and entertainment books in this beautiful city. To some extent, each version has a different version of the story. Amazon.com shows over a hundred.

Lewis has become one of the most historically sensitive and famous cities in the area. Some people still call Lewis by another old name Lewis Town. Some of our visitors called him Williamsburg North with a little wink and a smile to go with their love. We have a beautiful small city center along Second Street, Pilotaun Road, Market Street, Savannah Road and Royal Route. There are numerous specialty shops, restaurants and even the famous King Cream shop on 2nd St .. to seduce our many pedestrians. Lewis is more than any other city in our region, a great place to stroll around the city when you open small corners, shops, businesses and professions that are usually located in historically attractive buildings. This is not uncommon to see hundreds of people walking the streets of Lewis, even in the off-season. In the summer season, spring and autumn, it is customary to see thousands of people and families walking slowly and looking at our old houses, businesses, museums and scenic views.

Port Lewis is a wonderful picturesque deep-water port, the only one in the eastern county of Sussex. There are sailboats and larger boats moored along the Lewis and Rehoboth Canal from the Roosevelt entrance at the north end of Lewis down to the Canal Bridge, where the Kings and Savannah Road join the breeding bridge and connect historic Lewis to Lewis Beach.

Port Lewis, taken from The Lighthouse.

Lewes Beach is more recently developed than the city of Lewis. The houses of Lewes Beach have been there for over 50 years, and many of the older, smaller houses-clamps are being removed, and large modern houses have been built on these sites. Lands of Lewis Beach, all lots, belong to the city of Lewis. Residents, owners and businesses receive a 99-year lease, which is renewable. It was assumed that this lease was only for raising rabbits, but, without changing conditions or laws, it is now used to support many beautiful beach houses. A small rent is paid annually to the city of Lewis. Lots in Lewis "sell", in fact, the lease is transferred to new landowners for the same price as the land.

Cape Henlopan State Park includes much of the bay and ocean front and the beaches around Lewis. There are several communities; Pilot Point, Cape Shores, Port Lewis and the Delaware River and the Bay Pilot Association. Cape Henlopen State Park was once a Fort Miles army base. Fort Myles was created between World War I and World War II to protect the Delaware Bay traffic flow from German submarines. Now thousands of acres of beach, dunes, wetlands, and forests that stretch between Lewis and Rehoboth are part of the park, and military buildings have other coastal areas.

William Penn was a very beloved European and politically active supporter of ordinary people who remained under the yoke in England, hiding his aversion to the religions of kings and the secret meeting. Penn was suspected of various political crimes and executed here, assuming that other people, like simple reason, are just people who already live in a terrible and deadly and uncivilized reserve with the Indians. This land in exile Penn, called the Forest of Penn or Pennsylvania, was in deference to its social and political popularity. In 1682, the duke handed the demand to Lews Penn, who wanted to provide a navigable water route from his new colony of Pennsylvania to the ocean. Three Delaware counties that became the three lower counties (or territories, as Penn called them) from Pennsylvania. Separate counties were called New Castle, Kent (formerly St. Jones) and Sussex (formerly Hoornkill, also known as Workkill and Dial). Maryland’s English owners disputed Penn’s claim to Delaware, and the border dispute was not fully resolved until 1750.

At first, prisoners of the Delaware county did not want to join the Quaker “radical” and very political colony in Pennsylvania or their affairs settled in Philadelphia. They finally adopted the charter of Penn in 1701 after the provisions were added, giving the Three Lower Districts the right to a separate meeting, which first met in 1704. Delaware supported quasi-autonomy before the American Revolution. However, the two colonies maintained strong ties, and the two leading statesmen of Delaware during the Revolution, Thomas McKean and John Dickinson, also occupied a prominent place in the affairs of Pennsylvania.

Rehoboth is the next historic city south of Lewis. Rehoboth Beach is known as the Summer Capital of the country; because many of the power elites in Washington, DC, spend holidays and visit here. Rehoboth Beach; The summer capital of the country also has another name - Weekend Washington, the name is popular, in particular, with the crowd of the college from George Washington University in downtown Washington. The traffic from Washington to DC is so heavy that it’s not unusual for people to spend 4-8 hours every Friday or Saturday, traveling 100 miles from the city to our beach. Rehoboth was originally settled as a result of the fact that it was a place of Christian revivals in camps, where preachers and parishioners would come to renew vows to God and bathe in the waters of the sea for baptism and renewal of spiritual and physical health. They did not come during the mosquito season for many years, and when they started to fly more, they carried their heads to toes for reasons of modesty and protection from flies, mosquitoes and fogs like flocks of mosquitoes.

We are the focal point for DC students who come to the beach and have fun. As these students of the age join the highest ranks of the government a lot, and these are numerous counselors; and they still come to the beach here in Rehoboth, Dewey and Bethany. The universities of Washington DC show that they are the strength training bases for this nation and the social and ruling elite of the world. The Georgetown University Government Department, in collaboration with the School of Summer and Continuing Education, offers students-students a unique opportunity to spend an exciting semester as an intern in the capital, living and studying on the campus of one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States. Students gain valuable hands-on experience needed to be competitive in the labor market today, while teaching them an academic resume with university loans from Georgetown University. State University is known for its stringent standards, especially in Law School and Medical School. This pressure continues for summer sessions. These students will become one of the best and most famous doctors and lawyers in America. Almost 100% of these GU students leave the city center on Friday after lunch and travel directly to Rehoboth and Dewey Beach. The party begins when they start the car, or in most cases, a jeep or SUV.

George Washington University stretches through the city center along Pennsylvania Avenue and on to Watergate. GW or GWU, or one correct, is marked as a place where the future leaders of our country receive education and intern. The school works with students who manage parents and work at Hill, DCGW students are often among the first to run away from the city and go to the beach, especially to Dewey Beach.

Dewey Beach отмечен девизом «The Dewey Thing», «Just Dewey It», «Live IS a Beach», «Dewey - образ жизни» и многое другое.
