Where did the name "Mandeling" come from? There are many stories around this, but the next one seems to be the most believable. During the Japanese occupation of Sumatra, the Japanese soldiers asked the local owner for coffee breaks about the coffee they were served. Because of the linguistic misinterpretation, the operator of the coffee shop understood that he was asked: what kind "He was and immediately answered", Mandailing , of course. Japanese soldiers did not understand that the shop owner was referring to his ethnic group. Instead, the soldiers thought the name was Mandalin coffee.

Years later, in Japan, a former Japanese soldier asked a businessman in Sumatra if they could organize regular supplies of excellent coffee called Mandaline. According to this story, the Pwani coffee broker recognized a business opportunity and set about sending fifteen (15) tons of Mandail coffee to Japan. The design is simply stuck and has been used since, since the most common writing is “Mandeling”.
