You may have heard people say that when designing a room you should start with the area rug and go around it. While there is no “right track” for room design, starting with a regional rug, this is a method that allows you to achieve a full-sized look, with very little know-how. The reason for which it works is that your color palette is already provided for you. If it looks great in the carpet, it will fit perfectly in the room - no guesswork!
For starters, obviously, you need to choose your carpet. Choose one of them with a minimum of 4-5 colors for best results. Orients are particularly well-suited for this technique because of the number of colors they contain, but modern carpets can work. (And, by the way, Oriental people can look amazing in modern spaces!) For most rooms, 8x10 is the most suitable size for a seat or a bedroom or 6x9 in small rooms.
Paint color: Ignore everything that is the main color of your carpet. Of the remaining colors should be a pair, which are presented quite noticeably. Choose your favorite. Congratulations, you have a wall color! Thinking of a wall with an accent? Look at the colors that are used only as accents in the rug (see, How does it work?). Again, choose the one you like and your wall with an accent! (FYI, controlled from the basic color of the carpet, allows it to be a function in the finished space.
Upholstery: By “upholstery” I mean the main fabrics on your furniture, not pillows with an accent, etc. (We will deal with this in a minute). The simplest and safest upholstery bet is to go with your favorite neutral color to the rug, but again, do not use the dominant color. Beige, cream, white, brown, khaki, brown and olive are all good, safe choices. Unless your carpet has neutral colors, brown and beige are almost always excellent. (Black is also considered neutral, but it should be used carefully or it can easily overcome the space.) If you have smaller pieces of furniture, such as chairs, ottomans or benches, feel free to use a second or even third color on them, which may be different neutral, or something more daring, if you prefer. Do not want a neutral attitude to your upholstery? Look at the same colors that you chose when choosing your paint and choosing another.
Window handling: I mean the window treatment of the fabric, not the blinds or shades. There are two ways you can go here. If you want windows to make a statement, this is a good opportunity to repeat the main color of your regional rug. If you prefer your window treatments to be thinner, use the same color that you chose for your walls or your upholstery.
Auxiliary equipment: Time to strike! Here you bring the room back to life. Look at the details of your rug and select two favorite colors. Use them (alone or in combination with the colors that you have already used) in your accent cushions, lighting, flowers, works of art, books, photos, candles and any other accents in the room.
A brief description to illustrate what we have done here: If color is important in your rug, it should be important in the room (for example, walls, windows and furniture). If color is used less in a rug, it should be used less indoors (for example: the accent of furniture and accessories). Just like that, the room is full!
