Barbecue Guide on Grill Islands and Outdoor Kitchens -2

When it comes to outdoor living, a gas barbecue grill is a must for most homeowners and has a kitchen island, which makes it more fun and functional as an outdoor barbecue area. In addition to the main five-story grill island, you can add a side burner, refrigerator, sink, ice container, grill lamp, drawers, cabinets, and other accessories. To simplify the process of defining your needs, let's review this list below to help you plan the perfect barbecue design.

What need or desire does it fulfill?

Are you satisfied with a portable grill that you can move about? Or would you prefer a grill that is built into the island where it is integrated into your backyard courtyard design? Are you going to chat on the grill where you can entertain family and friends? Are you a gourmet chef and want all the bells and whistles that someone thinks to have an open kitchen?

Form against function.

If you first want to cook a barbecue to cook a grill, and then eat inside, there may be a simplest form of grill station, and operation can be a priority. What will it look like on your patio when not in use? How does it fit into other landscape elements in which you can include such an open fireplace, recreation areas, pools, fountains and lawns?

Does he use a target other than the grill?

Add a seated bar to the main island so that guests can interact with you while cooking. The tabletop is also a place where you can put drinks, plates and dishes, such as a tabletop. A refrigerator or a built-in freezer adds a convenience factor in that you don’t need to make several trips to the covered kitchen. This allows you to hang your guests on the street.

How can it be placed on the patio?

The location of the barbecue grill is always an important decision. But first answer the above questions to determine its shape and function. These criteria will go into its design and configuration. If this is a simple grill station, in which direction will the grill be? How close is it to the kitchen door? Is there sufficient ventilation and separation from combustible structures? Will it be straight, L-shaped or angular? Is there enough patio space for circulation around it and in the seating area for the bar?

What design options do you have? (custom or modular / modular)

Barbecue islands can be custom-made and made of brickwork or can be pre-made using steel studs, a cement slab and finished with plastering or stone cladding. Today there are many manufacturers who build islands according to your specifications, and then send them to you to complete or deliver them to your home in an almost completed form.

Infrastructure - electricity, gas, supports, waterline, permits

Regardless of custom-made or finished products, you will need a minimum gas, which can be either propane or natural gas. A natural gas line should be underground and pierced to climb the island or enter through the back, depending on how it is located on your patio. Propane tanks are not as convenient as connecting to natural gasoline, but much cheaper from the point of view of the initial installation.

Electric may be needed for lighting the grill, hood light, lantern on the worktop, electric motor for the grill or for accessories on the island. Not providing access to the island is a mistake, so many grill owners end up using battery-powered lamp clamps.

One of the advantages of a pre-made island barbecue is that you do not need to lay a significant footing, as you will be with a specially built brick island. It will be just a hard surface courtyard. Building permits may or may not be required for the island itself, but if you use electricity and gas, these items must require a permit. Contact the construction department to find out what is required.

If a sink is required, a cold waterline must be connected, as well as a discharge line for sewage. Most building codes require a sink to be connected to the sewer system, but this is usually not possible when building an outdoor kitchen after the plumbing system was built. Typically, a small dry well is designed so that wastewater from sewage flows into a garden or arable land. Just do not use your sink as if it were a real kitchen sink. Think about what happens in the sewer.

Finishing - worktop and curbs

The surface of the tabletop can be tile, travertine, granite or stone. The sides may be stucco to fit your home or a cultivated stone veneer, depending on how much you want to get or possibly link it to another structure, such as a fireplace.

Accessories and features

The size of the grill is the most important consideration when determining the size and length of the island, as it will crowd out a suitable place for the countertops. How many people will you serve? Side burners are available for placing pallets and pans. Here is a list of some accessories that you can consider:

  • Smoker
  • Wood grill to accompany the gas grill
  • Back with the raised bartop
  • Console countertop backless
  • Fridge
  • Ice / drink holder
  • underpants
  • Access to doors inside the island to reach vapor valves or propane tanks
  • Shelving or storage boxes
  • Tilt garbage holder

Spend a lot of time thinking about what you really want on an open island barbecue, and whether you need all the bells and whistles available. You may be able to figure out the cost of online research of prefabricated options, but some installation will be required on site. Even better, contact your landscape specialist to help you design and build your island to avoid anything.
