Silicon carbide is commonly known as carborundum. The compound is composed of silicon and carbon elements, and their chemical formula is SiC. The compound is naturally found as moissanite. It is used as an abrasive, for which a huge amount of compound is produced every year.
Do you know that this compound has various uses? If not, continue reading this article to learn about the use of the compound with silicon carbide associated with the reaction.
For construction materials
The compound is often used in bulletproof vests and composite armor. They also serve as racking and auxiliary materials in high temperature areas such as glass melting furnaces, fire ceramics, etc. Shelves for the SiC furnace are used because they are lighter than traditional alumina floors.
How to support a strong catalyst
Silicon carbide, associated with the reaction, has a natural oxidation resistance property. This, it is selected as a heterogeneous catalyst to support the oxidation of hydrocarbons, such as n-butane-maleic anhydride.
In steel production
When dissolved in a basic oxygen furnace, the compound can be used to make steel. The excess energy generated in the furnace allows more scrap materials to be recycled, such as hot metals.
As abrasive and cutting tools
Silicon carbide is durable. Here they are often used as an abrasive in modern lapidar. Its hardness makes it useful in manufacturing for works such as water jet cutting, grinding, sandblasting and honing.
Thinner particles of silicon carbide are fixed on paper to make sandpaper and grab skateboard tape.
In electrical systems
They are very much used in electrical voltage, since silicon has a higher absorption of voltage. The earliest use of this compound was in lighting installations. Due to the voltage-dependent resistance, the columns of the carborundum granules were used to connect power lines to the ground. Thus, when a lightning strike, excess voltage will be transferred to the ground harmlessly.
If the switches are made of them, they can be placed sequentially. Since they are good for high voltage requirements, they can easily reduce the complexity of the system.
Like Carborundum Printing
Another application of SiC compounds is engraving printing technology, commonly known as Carborundum printmaking. On the surface of the aluminum plate, Carundum is applied to the paste. When the paste is dry, the ink application will be made. The ink enters the grainy surface. When ink is erased from bare areas, the ink plate is printed on paper. Colored marks stamped on the paper are the resultant print.
Regardless of the above, there are several other applications of silicon carbide. Thus, industries are growing more on this cost-effective mix for their production needs.
