I had just completed an online search for business and marketing consultants, and even as a professional business consultant I was left confused and skeptical. The profession seems to be filled by those who persuade, have little experience and some who only want to sell you anything other than knowledge based on experience. Fortunately, under the rubble there are those who have spent a lifetime in business and who practice professional consultants to offer suitable clients. Since this is my business, I decided it was time to offer my comments on why you might need a professional consultant and how you can use it.
I am a business development, strategic planning and marketing consultant. I specialize in helping small and medium-sized companies to review their current activities and provide recommendations on critical analysis, strategic planning and implementation in my areas of expertise. My goal is to help small businesses and medium-sized companies grow, to understand where they are today, where they want to go, and exactly how to get there.
With disclosures, let me provide my guidance on hiring a business consultant, what to look for, and what to expect from your time and money.
1) EXPERTISE: The only most important reason for hiring an external business consultant is to provide an experience you don’t have at home.
Most people have work experience in their industry, and many of them have work experience in two or three industries. Some people even have experience with 10 or 15 products in this industry, but have the knowledge, experience and knowledge of managing a leading product range from more than a hundred companies, as well as marketing and distribution in various markets such as North America, Europe and Asia is the experience of few people.
When you are looking for a consultant, you want someone to have a breadth of knowledge and experience beyond what you already have. Along with bringing in a new or other perspective for your analysis and strategic planning, the consultant should bring knowledge that goes beyond your current environment.
By attracting someone with a wide range of knowledge and experience in your area of expertise, you complement your current knowledge base. Most companies already have excellent people who fulfill their responsibilities in the areas of business development, marketing and sales. Restrictions arise from the "box" in which we work. You and your employees run at full speed to keep up with the demands of your business. In many cases, you make fires as fast as they light (if you are lucky). This environment dictates that you focus on the task. When you and your staff meet, you discuss real issues that require immediate solutions. There is little time to research what other companies are doing and what is successful or not for them.
The consultant should take out of the box. look to your table the moment they walk in the door. They may not understand the triviality of your business right away, but through discussion and some research they will bring new perspectives and ideas into the process of problem solving and business planning. Their expanded worldview will open up new opportunities for your organization and offer ideas that have proven successful in other environments.
2) ECONOMY: The second, in all likelihood, reason to hire a consultant to develop an expert business is to save money.
Hiring the experience you need for every aspect of your business development process is not only impractical, but also impossible.
When we need professional experience, we either outsource or recruit new employees. Today, in this economy, hiring new employees is a luxury that small businesses cannot afford. Outsourcing is a good alternative, and in the case of consultants it is a cost-effective alternative.
In addition to immediate knowledge, consultants bring all the benefits of outsourcing. Taxes and benefits are responsible for the consultant and are never carried forward as company overhead. Costs are monitored and can fit your budget. Hiring and shooting is as easy as dialing a phone. No job search, no holidays. Consultants are usually available when you want them and spend when you do not. For many, this description is a bit inconvenient, but a professional consultant is an independent business person (or company) who works with pleasure from YOU.
In addition to all the benefits of outsourcing, a professional consultant brings immediate payback. To duplicate the experience of a good consultant, you may need 3, 5 or even 8 different positions that can be filled by experienced managers. Each position requires training and integration into the organization. One expert not only provides the knowledge base of these positions, but also gets on the ground.
Finally, in relation to a good consultant - hourly or daily pay. My experience is that they are usually rated at the level of a senior partner in a law firm or a regional accounting firm. Compared to the cost of hiring the same experience on a long-term basis, they are almost always a bargain.
When hiring a consultant, clearly define your goals and determine the results that he will provide. Always get a solid quote. Then consider; can we do it in the house? If so, what is the cost of using our own workforce, including the cost of attracting this workforce from other projects? If not (which is usually the case), then ask if the costs and benefits are worth it?
3) US DELIVERY TERMS: You want to receive a product that can be used for a long period of time through the organization.
In most cases, you hire a business development consultant to help you solve a specific problem or, more often, help you determine an action plan to take you where you want to go. In such cases, you want someone to submit a roadmap in writing for future activities. To do this, they must be able to guide you through a thorough and thorough review process in which you and the consultant determine what works and what does not, and where the holes are in your current plan.
A good consultant will then be able to lead the strategic planning process in which the consultant, you and your staff will work together to develop an expanded plan in which your ideas and desires are combined with the consultant to create a plan that is much better than anyone could create.
Finally, a qualified expert consultant will be able to create a written plan that includes a complete marketing plan and a budget that can be used as a guide if you manage to take a roadmap to take you where you want to go.
This document should not be an academic study, but a dynamic real-world document that reflects the practical experience of your organization and consultant, and is used, regularly reviewed and updated.
4) PURPOSE: You must have objectivity, which ensures that the advice you receive is in YOUR interest.
You want the consultant to be objective, without conflicts of interest or hidden programs. To provide you with valuable information for which you pay, your consultant should have only one dedication - you.
This does not mean that the consultant you hire does not have or will not work in the future for companies in your industry. In affect, this experience and diversity of knowledge is what gives them value. This means that they sign a confidentiality agreement; they do not discuss or give out any confidential information to anyone in your organization; and they are not obliged to any other company, which will worsen their work for you.
What you want is someone who has experience, called an expert, and professional ethics to match their experience.
5) HANDS IN EXPERIENCE: Finally, you want someone to have experience in this field. As a small business manager or entrepreneur, you need experts who understand the problems you face, and who have had to face and solve these problems.
As a small businessman in my first company (engineering and engineering company), I hired someone who was a high-level manager with a very large engineering firm. I thought they would bring experience in how to manage my business. What I received was for those who were used to managing assistants and departments, but who did not have real knowledge about how to do the work. In other words, he understood big business and big budgets, but he did not know how to roll up his sleeves and solve my problems. After spending a lot of time and money, I finally realized my mistake. After that, I became convinced that the consultants I hired had the practical experience of an entrepreneur and knew what a small business was.
When you hire a consultant, you want someone there to build and manage companies, analyze markets, and implement and manage business development, marketing and sales campaigns on a wide range of markets for a variety of products, for small and medium businesses You want a professional consultant with practical experience who understands your problems and can offer advice and solutions in the real world.
The best way to ensure that you have an experienced professional who can really help your organization. to talk to him A qualified consultant will have a story that speaks in your market, will have links and will be able to communicate with you in such a way as to inform you that they know what they are talking about. You will hear their competence in answering their questions and in the questions they ask you.
I invite you to familiarize yourself with their materials, visit their website and complete your due diligence, name each person you consider qualified, and speak with him. Ask questions about your business and industry, and listen carefully to the answers. If the answers are full of fluff, and the hyperbole knows that the service you receive is likely to be the same. If, on the other hand, you hear information that seems real, has an essence and reflects an understanding of the subject, you may have found someone who can really help you reduce the learning curve of building your business, help you reduce costs, and help you significantly advance your small business or medium company ahead.
Some final comments about hiring a business development consultant:
Consultants may be experts, but they will not know everything about each industry. In most cases, you will know your industry and business better than ever. What a good business development consultant brings to your desk is a diverse experience that can be applied to your situation. They bring new ideas and the ability to think outside the box, which, combined with your specific company knowledge, catapults your organization forward. Do not expect them to know in advance all the statistics of your industry or the demographics they can get through research. What they will know is how to resolve a leader’s questions about where you want to go and how to get there.
Professional consultants were full-time and long-term. They are not part-time consultants, not between jobs. Their experience is based on long-term work and effort, and it is displayed on the service they provide to you.
The best consultants work on a paid basis, with prices indicated and known in advance. Proposals must be in writing and detailed to determine the objectives, scope and timing of projects. Transparency and the absence of surprises is exactly what you are looking for.
Good luck and good marketing.
