Monkey Business: Is there a monkey Proper pet for you? -2

Senseless work ...

As a young teenager living on the west coast of Florida, I was like a fish out of water. I moved there from New York with my parents. There were a lot of things that I was used to, and I was not a fan of heat or mistakes. The one who invented the air conditioner has my eternal gratitude! Then there were things that helped me tolerate any negatives. Casual lifestyle and dress, beaches and fishing, to name a few. One of the things I really loved in Florida was that it lacked many of the rules and restrictions that East Coasters were engaged in and is still damned today. Even in the early 1970s, you could not go to a pet store in New York or Long Island and buy a monkey. However, you can do it in Florida.

Before the government decided that they would make all the decisions for us, there was a time when you could solve a lot of things for yourself. This included what kind of pet you might want to purchase or adopt. Unfortunately, there were some people who spoiled it for honest, sincere and thoughtful pet owners ... People who left their dogs, constantly tied to a tree, kept the alligator in their apartment or used their home as a rescue center for animals, fed cats in a completely unacceptable environment ... Now I am not saying that there should be no laws against the preservation of certain species of wild or exotic animals as pets. I want to point out that the government should forbid people to own animals, because they are endangered or, according to some “experts,” can be psychologically damaged while living with people ... Then they bark at the wrong tree.

As a boy of fourteen, I entered the Florida pet shop and saw a white monkey that was languishing in a small cage. It was not a case of neglect or abuse. This type of thing is often done as a hook in pet stores so that you can buy one of your more expensive or hard-to-sell options. So said my dad, and he was right. Another week passed, and the monkey was still there when I returned. At $ 25, it was not worth a fortune, and that price meant that the store wanted it to disappear. It was a time when there were few tourists in the city, and this made it difficult to sell. Most places were older and did not need to keep a primate as a pet. In addition, the monkey was not capable of self-promotion. He was barely weaned when someone took him from his mother, gave him a few shots and sold him to a pet shop for resale. As a result, the animal was shy, bewildered and frightened.

I went to the local library and did some research on protein monkeys before I finally bought it two weeks after my first visit to a pet store. My parents were good with my purchase because I have always been a responsible pet owner who had a dog, birds and guinea pigs. The dog died before we moved. Other pets were adopted by neighbors who already knew and loved them because it was impossible to tear them down. I called my monkey Sam and brought him home to a large cage that we kept in the Florida room, with window blinds on the side of our house. He encountered an unused party that was overgrown and looked like a jungle. If necessary, this room could be disconnected from the air conditioner, but it was heated for a short period of time when our area experienced cold weather.

Monkey squirrels are easy to feed, not very expensive to keep and not hard to train, if you train them to do what they like. However, they require a lot of communication and mental stimulation. Fortunately, I liked Sam. At first he tried to bite me, so I bit him several times, until he learned not to be so aggressive. It was only possible because I got it so young. I also put him in a cage when he felt bad. The idea was to use conditional and repetitive discipline as tools for animal management. I was the head of this primate group, not his. I was a supplier of food, water and shelter. As soon as he understood all this, he learned faster. In the beginning I used a leash. After a few months it was not necessary. He was allowed to roam freely under our supervision and even play outside while we had a barbecue or they went to our pool. He used the empty trays in the next store, like an exercise yard, climbing trees and stalking birds and squirrels. He also used it as a pot, so I think you could say that he was almost prepared for the most part.

Dogs and monkeys are sworn enemies. You really can't do without the stress of one or both pets. In fact, monkeys are jealous. I highly recommend that if you plan to have a monkey of this type, you avoid other animals. Most monkeys that are not well prepared or graciously appreciated are likely to become average or capricious when they go into adulthood. Constantly in a cage the monkeys will urinate on you or throw feces on you. They can attack you or destroy the things they see are important to you if given the opportunity.

As a rule, monkeys are smart. They quickly learn and become great shoot artists. That is why learning is important. I always left Sam’s cell door open as soon as he was trained. I closed the doors to this room. He learned to close or open the cage door when he approached him. After a while, he learned to open and close all doors leading to the backyard so that he could go outside to play or do his own thing. But he would never have gone without one of us, gave him our permission. The doors to his room were locked shut when we left without him.

To own a squirrel monkey is easy and difficult ... satisfaction and disappointment ... fun and annoying ... but is it ethical? Is it harmful to the animal? You will have to decide for yourself, without your city or state, already done it for you. The truth is that people are going to own monkeys no matter. In China, this is illegal, but thousands of Chinese own “pocket monks”, which are usually bought as children's pygmy mothers, capuchins or resus monkeys. They treat them badly. They tie their hands to learn to practice walking for two, not on all fours, which is painful and unnatural for them. They shave off their fur and dress them in clothes. You get the picture. These animals are symbols of status in China, where most authorities look the other way and ignore the rich and important people who own them. However, if they or responsible pet owners did not buy monkeys, they would be sold to research laboratories and sentenced to life for life, subjected to physical or emotionally destructive experiments, living in a tiny cage devoid of love or intercourse.

Each year, tens of thousands of monkeys are sent to research institutions around the world, and many orders for more from these same torture centers remain unfilled. Given this fact, it is difficult to worry about the morality of owning a monkey as a pet compared to the same animal as a lab rat. Most of the people I know, who owned the monkey, did not pay any attention to them or did not shave, beat or hold him in the wrong environment. Once again, if you have a legal right to own it, you must decide whether to do it or not. Before doing anything, do a lot of research and buy from a reputable breeder if you decide that a monkey is the right pet for you. Not more than 25 dollars. You will spend $ 3000- $ 6000 depending on the monkey you choose. Most people prefer capuchins for their ability to learn tricks and behavior. If your tiny plan is Pygmy monkeys have the size of a finger, like babies, and the size for hands - adults. Squirrel and Monkey spiders require more time and effort than most people who want to invest in a pet.
