Cleaning and maintenance of an antique wooden globe or replica -2

Will you park your 1923 Duesenberg on the street, and not in your garage, or take your new Aston Martin in an automatic car wash? I hope not. Choose treasures, both old and new, demand attention - no matter what they are.

Cleaning and maintaining the state of a wooden globe, whether it is genuine antiques or antique copy, requires diligence and know-how. You might think that you do not need to be as careful with reproduction as with the original of the 16th or 17th century, but this is not necessarily the case. High-quality wooden poles and hinges are usually made by skilled craftsmen who have used thousands of methods and materials for thousands of years, so it is important to ensure proper maintenance.

How to clean your antique wooden globe

Inspect your globe before cleaning it and act only if there are no damages or weak points.

To remove dust, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use spray or furniture lacquer. If you notice areas that are starting to peel off, repair them. The fabric can catch one of these areas and worsen the situation.

If your antiques need more than a little dust, here are my 2-step, easy-to-use cleaning instructions: 1) Not 2) Find an experienced, respected conservative to clean and / or repair it.

There are many suggestions on the Net about how to clean up antiques written by people who claim to be specialists. Unfortunately, many people destroy their treasured treasures by following their advice. Improper cleaning can destroy the map in the ancient world, so make sure that any “specialists” you consult with really know what they are doing.

Professional conservatives can do quite a bit. They can retouch and stabilize it and repair the shell. If the card is missing or damaged pieces, they can often be replaced by printed reproductions that are painted in accordance with the rest. Sometimes conservatives can even reduce or even eliminate discoloration and yellowing.

How to clean a copy of Vintage Globe

High-quality diamond-shaped replica globes must be cleaned as carefully as authentic antiques, because most likely the map of your wooden globe will be made in the same way. It consists of using printed sheets of paper, called paper sips, attaching them to the shell, and then varnishing them.

Before cleaning, inspect your globe. For dust, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. If you see peeling or weak points, first repair it - the fabric can get into one of these areas and increase damage.

If the dust is not sufficient, clean the surface of the globe with a soft, dry cloth. Work in small sections, wiping (do not wipe) loose dirt. For excessive stains, try moistening a soft cloth with plain water, but be very careful. Read the section below, because sometimes dirt or stains are preferable to a damaged globe.

Remove the fabric very well or spray water on the fabric (never on the globe). The strength of varnish has gone a long way over the centuries, but this does not mean that your globe is completely sealed and waterproof. Excess moisture remaining on the surface may be saturated with a card, so do not let water sit on the surface. Dry the area immediately with a soft, clean cloth.

If this is still not enough, you can risk mixing water with a small amount of soap or detergent and repeating the steps above. Cleaning without harm depends on how careful you are, what potentially harmful substances are in the detergent, and how well your copy of the globe or replica is made on the basis of the ball. Never use harsh or abrasive materials or solutions containing alcohol or solvents.

Care Tips

o Keep the globe out of sunlight. Prolonged exposure can lead to fading of colors and printing of the map, as well as to a dark and yellow lacquer applied to the paper holes.

o Do not use abrasive or harsh detergents, or solutions with alcohol or solvents when cleaning your globe. Avoid even using water if there is enough mild cleaning with a dry soft cloth.

o If any part of your globe begins to peel off or is already there, or if you see weak spots or surface damage on the sink, immediately bring it to a professional conservative.

o Keep your globe, especially antique, in an environment where relative humidity and temperature do not fluctuate much. Many of the materials used to make vintage globes and replicas are sensitive to climate change.

Proper care is obviously necessary to preserve the state of antiques. However, meticulous servicing of a vintage replica can help ensure that a globe made in the 21st century will continue to become antiques next.
