My love affair with food must compete with my love affair with New York. I was thinking about publishing my first article about a place in Sydney where I live, but I thought it would be more authentic to start from a place in New York, since I had just returned from a trip, and that would be my last business. food. I also want my articles to include places where you can eat for all budgets, so I initially did not dare to make my first place in relation to Buddhakan, which could pull on wallets. Nevertheless, I believe that the best investments that I can make with my money, allow him to sit in my stomach - and, besides, a trip to Buddakan is a pleasure that I need to share! For any fan of Sex and the City, this rehearsal restaurant-dinner from the first movie is also a stopover on the HotSpots tour if you do it while in New York (although you don’t really eat here in an amazing landscape - especially in the chandelier).
Lex and I visited Buddakan in the New Year 2016. Our table was at 8 pm and I highly recommend booking via OpenTable if you are planning a visit, as this is a popular place with locals, especially on weekends. The restaurant is located in Chelsea, close to the Chelsea markets. This is a fairly discreet entry, but don't let it fool you. When you enter a dimly lit restaurant, sophistication sees it being washed out of every corner. You are met by a long line of hostess, in which you specify your name for booking and check your coat, and then immediately open the bar. We waited no more than three or four minutes, which was enough time to properly worry about our food and soak up the atmosphere. Our server went to the table at the far end of the main floor. There is a ground floor with a public table to share food and conversation - again to turn to Sex and the City, this is the Carrie and Big table used for their lunch. I would definitely go back and request a seat at this table. Pan-Asian hip-place has a great sense of energy and elegance, and patrons are addressed in accordance with the dress code “chic in the center of the city”. Our beautiful server introduces itself and explains the menu. Her recommendations for two appetites, two networks and two sides for a batch of two were almost too much, but since the tariff was too good to resist, we shamelessly finished everything. I have to mention that the current two chefs, Yang Juan and Brian Ray, are the requisites for you guys.
What we ordered
We started by ordering a bottle of red - if I could remember which one I would include! I have to ask Lex, he remembers the wine list well.
For our two snacks, we chose edamame dumplings and pork buns. The dumplings were sitting in a broth with closed sausages and came in five servings with a bite. They were delicious, baked dumplings that were the perfect introduction to buddakan. Pork bottles were Lex's choice and usually were not what I would order, but I'm glad I tried. Buns consulted a charred pork belly, spicy shallots and napa cabbage. Lex classified them as "the best pork buns I have ever tasted." Although I am not usually a pork bun, I have to admit that they had a beautiful texture and just the right amount of spice.
For our parties, we ordered Asian green roast and vegetable rice. We were tempted to order pork noodles - next time! Asian greens had pine nuts and garlic chips, and they would fit our network perfectly (although I could just eat them on my own - they were amazing!). If you are not a fan of garlic, probably avoid them, as they definitely had a strong garlic taste (which makes them all better, in my opinion). We also ordered vegetable fried rice that had a hint of coconut and pineapple to add flavor. Again, it was fine, like a side impact, but also on it!
There were so many amazing network to choose from. There are a variety of seafood dishes, including salty and peach black bass, glazed Alaskan black cod and Cantonese pair of soles. Since Lex is not a fan of seafood, we stuck with meat and poultry options. My eyes were immediately turned to two options, and before I told Lex that they asked him to tell me what he wanted, fortunately, we were there! We made an easy decision about ordering beef with black pepper and chili-chili shard (you should know that Lex and I love chili, we tend to order it or add it to most dishes). The beef was a spear, enchanted ribs, on a crispy bird nest, which, to our satisfaction, was useless! The two textures complemented each other well, and the sauce was so neat that we made sure that every last drop of rice was vegetarian. The chicken was just tasty and honest, like nothing we have ever eaten before. It was a charred onion spread with Chinese pepper and chili sauce. I have to mention here that the chicken has become the perfect companion for Asian greenery and wine!
Admittedly, we were too full of food and wine to order any desserts, but that doesn’t mean that executive chef Daniel Skernik didn’t have many choices. Lex said that he would choose the dessert “Crying Chocolate”, which was ganash with Vietnamese ice cream for coffee, and I would choose “Feryge Feringue” with semi-freddo yogurt and fruit-flavored ice cream - yum! Other well-known options included Apple Tarte Tatin - a cinnamon variety with soy soy sauce - and banana almond bread pudding, olive oil sauce, and whiskey ice cream.
And so our stomachs were full, and our plates were empty. I will not say that it was the cheapest food we have ever eaten, it was a bill. In saying this, the portions were generous and the wine took up most of the bill. We also have generous advice, because the service was indeed part of the experience, and we were already in several places with less favorable service, so we wanted to acknowledge the attentive and knowledgeable service we received.
If you like Asian cuisine, then this is a must for you. Let me know if you try it or have been before.
Lis x
