Johannesburg is the city of gold, and in the Zulu language is Egoli. The discovery of Gold on the plains of Highveld was the reason why Johannesburg exists today and is one of the fastest urban events of the modern era. Johannesburg is the capital of Gauteng, the richest province in South Africa, with the largest economy in any metropolitan region in sub-Saharan Africa. The city is one of the 40 largest megacities in the world, and it is one of only three African cities, and the other two are Cairo and Cape Town.
At the age of 6, Johannesburg was the largest city in South Africa, with only a few reminders of those early years. No other city in the world grew faster than in Johannesburg, and this is the only metropolis that has ever been rebuilt in one century.
Johannesburg can offer some of the best art, culture, entertainment, sports and leisure to start your South African tours and safaris:
o Newtown Cultural Center, which has 20 cultural organizations, six museums and 3 art museums.
o Strannikov Stadium, the largest sports club
o Johannesburg Zoo and Zoo, which offers picnic areas, restaurants, a playground for children, as well as monthly art exhibitions.
o Goudrifstad is a popular tourist attraction in Johannesburg. This city is built around the old Crown Shaft and is partly a living museum where you can experience mining conditions, see how gold rushes and see traditional dances.
Johannesburg again includes Soweto, which was a separate city from the late 1970s until the 1990s. An abbreviation for SOuth-WEstern TOwnships, Soweto originated as a collection of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg, mostly inhabited by indigenous African gold mining workers. Ever included in Johannesburg, the apartheid regime (in power from 1949 to 1994) separated Soweto from the rest of Johannesburg to make it completely black.
