You see, soundproofing a home studio is another way that our home recording studio can turn into a money pit that recording studio producers are trying to encourage. You can understand why. They know that "where there is great interest and big dreams, there is money to be made."
How to soundproof a studio at home - why is it necessary?
Our goal is to weaken and absorb the sound and randomize the shape and environment of the home recording studio environment. In other words, if you're recording at home, you're probably tuning in the bedroom, living room, or writing to the garage. Square corners and hard walls and floor surfaces in our homes create the problem of sound ricochets and jumps all over the place, and also allow us to accurately listen, judge and mix our recordings.
How to soundproof studio - Walls
This is a method that I use myself, and this is a dirty, cheap way of soundproofing for studio walls and floors at home.
I actually discovered the perfect acoustic material for soundproofing my home studio by accident. I was at the hardware store, and I happened to see these foam tile mats. These foams, squares of two feet, each of which fits together like pieces of a puzzle. This allows you to combine them into any shape or size.
For soundproofing walls in your studio, simply bring very small brass nails through a rug (for example, those that are in the hanging sets) to attach them to the wall. We want to mount foam tiles if necessary, so we don’t want to stick foam tiles to the wall. No need to spoil the walls with adhesives or glues.
Do not forget to soundproof microphone stand
I use one foam tile under my microphone stand to isolate the resonance from the floor, which can move across the microphone stand. It works like a charm and does not cost much. Surprisingly, these mats actually look really cool on the studio walls.
Effective household materials for soundproof studio floors
- Wall-to-wall carpeting (often ugly but effective)
- Several shapes and sizes rugs. Currently, you can purchase inexpensive fake oriental-colored carpets or modern designer knockouts that create a pleasant atmosphere and do the work of moistening and absorbing sound reflection from the floor.
- Foam, as described above. You could tile your whole studio using these foam tiles.
Tip for buying soundproofing for a home studio: Instead of getting these mats in your sports shop's home fitness equipment section, an identical product is available even cheaper in the tools section of the hardware store, but they sell them as mechanical floor mats. In subsequent articles of this article we will talk about how to make a viciously effective vocal recording in seconds ... and this will be almost nothing.
